PSHE
“When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting and less scary”
PSHE At St Mary’s CEVA Primary
(Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education)
PSHE at St Mary’s CEVA Primary is led by the Inclusion team.
We believe that the ethos of our school underpins the PSHE development of all learners. It is central to the Ethos of our school.
‘Do everything in Love’ 1 Corinthians 16:14
‘Love yourself, Love others and Love the World’
At St Mary’s CEVA Primary School, we recognise that the personal development of pupils plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education which gives pupils opportunities to explore and develop:
- Their own values and beliefs
- Spiritual awareness
- High standards of personal behaviour
- A positive, caring attitude towards other people
- An understanding of how to keep safe and healthy
PSHE is a dimension of the whole school experience which makes the curriculum relevant, stimulating, creative and fun. It enriches each subject, and the ethos of St Mary’s CEVA, and is an essential thread of our whole school success.
Progression of skills and learning for PSHE
In our school, children are taught:
- People sometimes behave differently online, including by pretending to be someone they are not.
- The same principles apply to online relationships as to face-to-face relationships, including the importance of respect for others.
- The rules and principles for keeping safe online: how to recognise risks, harmful content and contact, and how to report them
- How to critically consider their online friendships and sources of information
- How information and data is shared and used online
Our Bodies
Curriculum
At St Mary’s CEVA Primary we have built our curriculum from the Protective Behaviours Themes, Kapow PHSE Scheme and the National Online Safety Hub to ensure our children have a broad and balanced mix of learning to meet the needs of an ever-changing world.

Why is learning PSHE so important at St Mary’s?
Research shows that pupils who are emotionally healthy do better at school. PSHE education helps children and young people to achieve their potential by supporting their wellbeing and tackling issues that can affect their ability to learn, such as anxiety and unhealthy relationships.
PSHE education also helps pupils to develop skills and aptitudes - like teamwork, communication, and resilience - that are crucial to navigating the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, and are increasingly valued by employers.
PSHE education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.
We believe that parents welcome a partnership between home and schools which supports their children’s personal and social development, and help deal with issues of increasing complexity such as those related to mental health and staying safe, both online and offline.
Assessment of PSHE Learning – is gathered through term Learning walks, Book Scrutiny and twice-yearly pupil Voice.
PSHE and Wellbeing at St Mary’s.
As part of our wellbeing support all children complete a Pupil Attitude to Self and School questionnaire (PASS)
This supports us to identify more vulnerable learners and where needed supplement with additional interventions through either small group or 1:1 work. These programs of work are taken from the Northamptonshire TAMHS Building Blocks model.
